Big River of Democracy Tour - Schedule and Pratical Info

Final call for registrations to the 2014 Big River of Democracy Briefing Tour across the United States! Our board members Bruno Kaufmann and Joe Mathews are going to co-host a Briefing Tour starting in Kansas City on November 3 and ending down in the Deep South a week later – in New Orleans. Join us, you are cordially invited!

The tour starts on November 3 at 11.00 and ends on November 9 in the morning.

Registration

You can register for the tour by paying the fee of EUR 1900 (double room occupancy) or EUR 2300 (single room occupancy) to Democracy International before deadline of October 15. For payment, please send a message to mueller[at]democracy-international.org with your contact info, a picture and brief bio for the Briefing Tour Reader ASAP.

Schedule

Day 1 – Monday, November 3 – Kansas City

11.00  Welcome Meeting Point at 816 Hotel
12.30 meeting with Judy Ancel, Missouri Jobs for Justice, backing an initiative for expanded early voting in Missouri.
14.30 Transfer
15.30 Meeting with Will Kraus, Missouri State Senator and lead author of the constitutional amendment establishing an early voting period on the ballot.
18.30 Dinner with Rev. Brian D. Ellison and Troy Lillebo at Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue

Day 2 – Tuesday, November 4 – Election Day

Morning stop at KCUR. Meeting with staff including Donna Vestal, Ron Jones.
13.00 Meeting with Secretary of State (KS) Kris Kobach at at polling station in Kansas City, Kansas 
Ballot measures at state level, and local level
14.30 Meeting with Barb Shelly, editorial page writer for The Kansas City Star
16.15 Meeting with Kate Casas and Anne Marie Moy from Teach Great Organization, which backed an initiative to limit tenure for teachers.
Dinner restaurant near hotel
Evening: election visits.

Day 3 –Wednesday,  November 5

TO THE SOUTH ON THE ROADS OF MISSOURI AND ARKANSAS ACROSS THE OZARK MOUNTAIN
Departure at 8.00 am
Lunch stop (12-2 pm)  in Carthage/Missouri (Mother Road Coffee) and meeting with local politicians, journalists

Arrival to Little Rock around 6.30 pm and check-in at Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown Little Rock.
Dinner at Doe’s Eat (Bill Clintons favourite place as governor) and brief introduction by Paul Jacob about Arkansas political and initiative history

Day 4 – Thursday, November 6 – Little Rock

9 am Meeting with Opponents to Issue 3 (Term Limits/Ethics)
10.30 am Briefing Issue 4 Proponents (Minimum Wage)
Noon  Lunch with Bettina Brownstein and David Couch, attorneys who challenged anti-initiative legislation
2 pm Clinton Presidential Library Tour
4 pm Meeting with Prof. Jay Barth of Hendrix College
5.30 pm Drinks with Paul Spencer (Ethics Reform)
Free evening

Day 5 – Friday, November 7

LITTLE ROCK-NEW ORLEANS
Departure at 8.30 am
Lunch stop near and visit to Vicksburg, one of the most important sites during the American Civil War
Arrival to New Orleans at around 6.30 pm and check-in at St Vicent’s Guest House, 1507 Magazine
Dinner with Tyler Bridges veteran New Orleans journalist.


Day 6 – Saturday, November 8

9 a.m.  Coffee and bagels at office next to Superdome. John Ayers, Cowen Institute.
Lunch 1 pm, (confirmed but timing, location not yet confirmed): Meeting with Karen Gadbois.


Day 7 – Sunday, November 9


End of Tour and Departure
