Europe has been a unique historical experiment of transnational cooperation, assuring the peaceful and solidary coexistence of the different, formerly hostile countries of the European continent. Now, after over 60 years of growing European citizenship, citizens from all over Europe, of all ages, social statuses and political standpoints, want to have a stronger voice in the major decisions that affect their lives and make the EU a Europe of the citizens.
The current state of the European Union, however, cannot live up the serious challenges it faces. Instead, we the citizens have become indignant that we have little or no say in shaping our future, we are outraged that huge decisions are made behind closed doors in Brussels, and we suspect that without proper democratic participation, government responds best to the demands of the biggest political and economic players rather than to the interests of the people.
That’s why we are calling for a new EU Convention - a democratic and inclusive forum where the big decisions about the future of the Union can be openly debated between politicians, civil society and citizens. Democratic Europe Now is building a network of individuals and organisations - from all corners of the continent and spanning the political spectrum - to demand more democracy in Europe.
