Democracy Camp

31-08-2022

What forms of political co-determination exist in Switzerland and surrounding countries? Which of them work well and why? During the Democracy Camp - a camp that brings together more than 50 youth and young adults - participants can exchange ideas on this topic, share their personal experiences and learn about the best ways of political participation. The Democracy Camp is organised by DSJ and Democracy International.

Background

While various developments cast a bad light on the state of democracy in Europe, Democracy Camp wants to highlight other, positive developments. Far from negative headlines, many new forms of political participation are emerging across Europe and deserve to be better known and spread by and for young people. It is therefore important to create an exchange platform for young people where they can share their personal experiences across national borders in order to contribute their knowledge and learn about new forms of political participation themselves. The present project provides the necessary platform for this.

Goals

  • An intercultural exchange between young people from different European countries with a focus on passing on democratic values
  • Recording and passing on knowledge based on successful projects (conception, fundraising, implementation, evaluation)
  • Identification and elaboration of best practices of political youth participation

Method

From 14-18 September 2022, an English-language camp will be organised for over 50 young people aged 15-25 who are interested in politics. The young people will be accompanied by camp leaders and experts. The composition of the young people should be as diverse as possible. For this reason, the participants will come from six different countries: the host countries Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany (35 people in total) and the host countries Austria, France and Italy (5 people each). The Democracy Camp will take place in Bern and Central Switzerland, more precisely in the Canton of Schwyz. Participation is free of charge for the youth and young adults.
