In January and February, the Citizens' Assembly on "Germany's Role in the World" met under the patronage of Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble. 152 randomly selected people from all over the Federal Republic of Germany deliberated in ten online sessions on foreign policy recommendations for the Bundestag and the Federal Government. The evaluation of this citizens' assembly has now been completed.

What went well, what needs to be improved? What were the backgrounds of the participants and what impact did the procedural design have on its outcome? These and other questions are at the core of the evaluation. The Institute for Democracy and Participation Research (IDPF) at the University of Wuppertal and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam will present findings from quantitative surveys, accompanying observations, qualitative interviews and surveys of the participants.

The evaluation team also presents a handout with recommendations for the future use of the instrument to support the organization, design and moderationof citizens’ assemblies in the future.

Further, Prof. Dr. Ziekow from the University of Speyer will present his expert opinion on the legal anchoring of citizens' assemblies at the federal level, which was commissioned by Mehr Demokratie.

As our guest speakers we have the pleasure to present:

  •     Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Lietzmann (IDPF)
  •     Prof. Dr. Ortwin Renn (IASS)
  •     Prof. Dr. Jan Ziekow (University of Speyer)
  •     Katharina Liesenberg (EsGehtLOS)
  •     Claudine Nierth (More Democracy)

This event will be held in German and simultaneously translated to English.
