What will we tell our grandchildren?

06-07-2015

At this very moment, the future of the European Union is being haggled and gambled over in a state of panic and helplessness. Democracy International instead calls for a proper debate to lay the foundation for a better, more democratic and more social Europe.

In 50 years we don’t want to be telling our grandchildren that we sold off cheap our democracy, but that we stood up for a Europe of the citizens.

We want history to be written with the people, not by emergency political decision-making that puts markets, leaders and financial interests first, nor by Governments ridding themselves of their responsibilities through ad hoc referenda.

We need a democratic re-start now!

We want a Europe in which citizens have real opportunities to participate in deliberations. A Europe in which citizens have the final say in fundamental decisions that affect our lives and the future of Europe. For this we call for a European Convention – a democratic and inclusive process that brings politicians, civil society and citizens together in an open debate to advise on the best proposals for Europe’s future. A Convention whose outcomes are legitimated directly by the citizens of Europe in a pan-European referendum.

Democracy International is fighting for real democratic change in Europe. Please support our work with a small donation.

Thank you for your help!

Please spread this call via your (social) media channels or please support our work with a donation.
