Berlin Referendum Volksenscheid Tempelhof

Tempelhof in Berlin remains green for all

26-05-2014

On 25 May Berlin’s citizens decided by referendum not to change the “Tempelhof Field” into an area of offices and building blocks as intended by the City Government of Berlin but to maintain the area as a green park and leisure area.

64,4 per cent of all those who turned out to participate in the referendum opted in favour, equalling 29,8% yes-votes of all eligible voters of Berlin. The referendum, which was held along with the EU elections in Germany, achieved the required turnout quorum of 25% (622.185 votes). Our partner organisation Mehr Demokratie e.V. demands to make compulsory holding referenda in Berlin on the same day as elections in order to meet the threshold. So far, only the citizens’ initiative “Wassertisch” against the privatisation of water services had been successful in Berlin (referendum in 2011).
