Revival of Democracy International Website

21-04-2011

On 18-19 April 2011 five activists from Democracy International (DI) met in Cologne for website training and to develop a new online communications strategy.

Democracy International was created in the early 2000s by activists from Mehr Demokratie in order to promote direct and participatory democracy throughout the world and at all levels of government. DI’s most important success to date has been the inclusion of the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) in the draft EU Constitution and then the Treaty on European Union (Lisbon Treaty).

After several years of inactivity, Democracy International is now being re-launched with a new legal status, international board and projects. Initial projects include the ECI Campaign to provide support for organizers and monitoring of the implementation of the ECI, the Navigator to Direct Democracy - a joint project with IRIE (the Initiative and Referendum Institute Europe) to map direct democracy tools and practices globally - and regular news on direct and participatory democracy developments around the world.

Most websites which currently report on the direct democracy movement are only available in German. Our website will feature news in English.
