Political Culture and Active Citizenship

Political culture and active citizenship

22-11-2017

The use of direct democratic instruments in international comparison. With examples from Ecuador, Germany, Hungary, Peru, Slovakia, Switzerland and Uruguay, this symposium aims to create a comparative inventory of the cultures of active citizen participation.

The goal of the conference is to identify country-specific cultural differences in a comparative approach and to analyse their significance for the active participation of citizens in the political process.

Can we identify a political habitus that spurs active participation of citizens? Which conditions promote or inhibit citizen participation? Why are direct democracy instruments used more intensively in certain countries than others? These questions and many others will be addressed, accompanied by cases from different countries in Europe and South-America.

When? 9-11 March 2018

Where? Gästehaus der Universität Wuppertal
