Kim interned at Democracy International for three months after completing her Bachelors degree in International Relations at the University of Nottingham. After her internship, she began her Masters in Environment, Politics and Development at King’s College London, with the aim of working in environmental management or consulting.

From June to September 2022, I had the great pleasure at interning at the Europe division at democracy international. As an organization sub-contracted by the European Commission to help with the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) Forum, I gained valuable insight into the democratic apparatus of the European Union, and the various tools available for citizens to exercise their democratic rights. During this time period I drafted reports on the ECI, helped gather feedback on the ECI, and wrote several articles about the ECI, various other citizens initiatives, and other democratically-led political action. Furthermore, I participated in the promotion of various ECI-adjacent campaigns, managed social media accounts, and participated in workshops aimed at facilitating democratic unity in the EU.

The team at Democracy International was both friendly and professional, with all staff being helpful, hardworking, and welcoming. During my time here I felt motivated and respected as a temporary staff member and the working culture encouraged independence and autonomy. I especially enjoyed the hybrid-work scheme and daily team meetings which allowed for great flexibility in my working day, while not compromising the social relations which are essential for cooperative and productive teamwork. My thanks go out to my supervisor Daniela Vancic for providing guidance, and overall being a fantastic mentor and co-worker.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Democracy International and appreciate the work they do towards facilitating and consolidating direct democratic action and the rights of constituents. I wish the team all the best, both in their personal and professional endeavours, and would relish the opportunity to work with them again in the future.
