Local initiatives in Germany need better rules in times of (Corona-)crisis

06-05-2020

While timely and necessary, the measures to halt the spread of COVID-19 have had an enormous impact not only on our daily lives, but also on our democracies. In this series, we try to asses how democratic practice has been affected and how we can make our future democracies more resilient.

The local citizens' initiative to halt the renovation of the Werner-Jaeger Halle in Nettetal was allowed to start collecting signatures at the same time that public life in Germany went into crisis-mode as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. With confinement rules in place and a submission deadline for signatures at the end of the month, they are now in dire need of more flexible rules.
