In 2024, the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy headed to Eastern Europe for the first time. The Bucharest Forum was co-hosted by Democracy International, Europuls, the City of Bucharest, the University of Bucharest and the Swiss Democracy Foundation, along with the assistance of permanent partner Mehr Demokratie and many other partner organisations.

Bucharest welcomed more than 400 participants from all over the world to discuss issues of direct democracy with a specific focus on the theme of trust. The Forum reflected its variegated topics of debate in the unique venues where it was held– the Bucharest Parliament, the historical Teatrul de Revista, and the Faculty of Sociology of the University of Bucharest. Around 30 sessions a day were held with a total of more than 150 speakers.

Ranging from panels, workshops, and bootcamps, people from all continents engaged in discussions on contemporary direct democracy challenges and opportunities through theories and active practices. Spotlights were given to the topic of elections, being 2024 the biggest election year in history globally and an important election year for Romania, with the voters going to the polls on the local, national and European level in 2024. The important role of youth in defending and promoting direct democracy was another important topic, with many young participants taking part in the Forum.

Thank you for participating and contributing to the 2024 edition of the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy.
