In 1988 together with others, Daniel Schily established the German democracy organization Mehr Demokratie. Since then he has dedicated his life to realizing more direct democracy and citizens' participation in Germany and at global level. Daniel Schily is married with three daughters and one son. He studied philosophy and mathematics at the University of Bonn, Germany.

He has notably promoted formats such as the European Public Sphere and the academy for a learning democracy. Besides his European activities he is also very engaged in global civil society exchange on democracy and human rights.
