STRONG WINDS, STRONGER SAILS: STANDING UP FOR DEMOCRACY

Dear ,

It’s more than just a stiff breeze—democracies around the world are facing strong headwinds. With Donald Trump's re-election, the rise of autocratic forces, and the declining appeal of the Western democratic model, a new world order is emerging on the horizon. What can Democracy International do to counter this? And do we even have an influence?

At times, our organisation feels like a small sailboat navigating these turbulent waters. We are not unsinkable—but those who are courageous know that strong winds can also propel us forward. Sometimes, you reach your destination faster in stormy weather than when there’s only a gentle breeze. Our sail is powered by the citizens who refuse to give up on democracy and are willing to stand up for their values.

That’s why, in 2025, Democracy International will continue to sail close to the wind—with programs to empower young people, our commitment to the European Citizens’ Initiative, and our campaign for a more democratic United Nations. We will keep expanding global networks and laying the foundation for more inclusive and participatory democratic processes. Because now, more than ever, courage and determination are needed.

Looking back on the past year, we warmly invite you to explore our 2024 Annual Report. It offers insights into our work over the past year and a glimpse of what lies ahead in 2025.

The challenges of 2025 are real—but so is the potential for progress. When people come together to defend the values that make democracy thrive, we can achieve great things.

We are counting on your support—especially in these stormy times!

Democratic greetings,

Andreas Müller,

Executive Director,
