IN HISTORIC ELECTION YEAR, WE NEED MORE DEMOCRACY

Dear ,

To me, elections alone do not make a democracy. Yes, in 2024 more people than ever before in human history will be able to cast their vote. But the recent elections in Russia, Iran and Cambodia show us once again that elections can also be a sham. Democracy goes beyond casting ballots. I believe, a functioning democracy means also being able to trust your fellow citizens, institutions and elected representatives. To be able to trust that they will not use the power in their favour or even to the detriment of the voters.

I'm looking forward to May! That's when activists, experts, journalists and decision-makers from all over the world will meet again for the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy in Bucharest. This year, the focus will be on trust: trust in institutions, trust in citizens and trust in elections.

The 12th Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy - the world's largest gathering dedicated to direct democracy - will take place from 15 to 18 May 2024 in Bucharest, Romania. Take part together with us!

Together we will learn about exciting democratic innovations in Bucharest. We will discuss how to cultivate a democratic culture and empower youth, with a special emphasis on the upcoming European Union elections.

Mark your calendars and join us in Bucharest!

Yours sincerely,

Caroline Vernaillen,
Co-chair of the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy
