Citizens' Assembly in Ireland

In January 2019, Democracy International organised a study tour of Dublin, Ireland for Mehr Demokratie Germany. German democracy activists met with Irish Members of Parliament and Ministry representatives to learn about the Irish Citizens’ Assemblies model.

Recommendations of a 2016-2017 Citizens’ Assembly led to two highly publicised referendums on abortion and blasphemy in Ireland in 2018: a success that inspired Mehr Demokratie to advocate for the organisation of a German edition on democratic reform. Throughout the three-day tour, participants met with key players: academics, politicians, officials, journalists, civil society, and citizens who were members of the last Citizens’ Assembly.
