EU Constitution - Ratification

Parliamentary approval

On July 6, 2005 the Maltese parliament ratified the European Constitution. Thus the 12th EU country has endorsed the charter. It was the first time that a first national parliament passed the document unanimously.

The idea of holding a referendum on the European Constitution has been ruled out by the government. Maltas former Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami declared before that Malta will not hold a referendum on the EU Constitution. Mr. Adami said that countries which are not constitutionally bound to hold referendums all agree, even if not publicly, that there should not be a referendum on the EU Constitution.

Parliamentary approval is expected to take place by mid-July.
