new convention on the future of Europe

An idea sets out for Europe

Democracy International has started to spread the idea for a democratic convention. We send letters to all parliamentarians in Europe and explained our proposal.

Currently, 31 MPs signed our call. Another 30 MPs expressed their support in a

letter without signing. These responses came from 14 countries.

There are also about 30 responses of people who did not sign. The content of these letters range from merely reporting the arrival of the letter to explanations why the recipients decided not to sign the call.

Dutch Party demands new convention

The dutch Green party (GroenLinks) adopted an own proposal for a new, democratic Convention last Saturday. The Greens have 8 out of 150 seats in the main chamber of parliament and have always been in the opposition.

The short motion said, next to some other points about Europe:

After the Dutch and French No the Treaty in this form is dead.

However, this does not imply that the citizens are satisfied with the current shape of the EU. Thus the EU must be improved.

A new Convention should (also) consist of appointed members and representatives directly elected by the Europeans

A new treaty should only be called a Constitution if it is short and readable, includes binding citizen rights and introduces a separation of powers.

There should be a EU-wide referendum on a new Treaty.

We will continue the work to spread our idea.
