EU Constitution - Ratification

Parliamentary approval

The Parliament approved the Constitution on 20 December 2004 by a large majority (342 in favour, 12 against and 8 abstentions).

Hungary is the second Member State to have ratified the Constitution.

Previous referendums on European issues

Pursuant to a specific article which had been inserted into the Constitution to that effect (Article 79), a referendum was held on 12 April 2003 on the accession of Hungary to the Union. Accession was approved by 83.76% of votes cast, with a turnout of 45.62%.
