Greenpeace action proofs: Europeans need the initiative now

Greenpeace action proofs: Europeans need the initiative now

05-02-2007

The citizens living in the European Union must get a say in political affairs on the EU level.

This is the message from the recent attempt to influence policy making: Greenpeace delivered a petition to Markos Kyprianou, European Commissioner for Health on 5 February: One million European signed the call for GMO labeling on milk, meat and eggs.

In the press release announcing this action Greenpeace has directly referred to the European Citizens’ Initiative:

“Public participation in decision-making was a cornerstone of the EU Constitution proposal, which the German presidency is seeking to revive. It grants civil society the right to call for Community legislation on key principles enshrined in the Constitution: these include citizens' right to information and freedom of expression.”

But a revival of the constitution is neither likely nor desirable. Democracy International campaigns for an altnetive: the immediate introduction of the European Citzens’ Initiative.
