EU Constitution - RatificationParliamentary approval -
The Greek Parliament approved the EU Constitution on April 19, 2005.
Referendums have no tradition in Greece. Although the Greek constitution refers to referenda, there is no law setting out the practical steps to carry out such a poll. In addition, the Greek government is in favour of letting the Greek Parliament ratify the future European Constitution without a referendum. Both, Government and the main opposition party are supporting the EU Constitution. However the PASOK (Socialist party), the Communists and the Coalition of the Left and Progress continue to ask for a referendum to be carried out.
