Hamburg: Fighting against the backlash

13-06-2004

In Hamburg, the regulations concerning direct democracy were cut back seriously by the parliament, which is dominated by the conservative party (CDU). Beforehand, Hamburg was the unofficial capital of direct democracy in Germany. Several bottom-up initiated referendums were successful.

The frequent use of direct democracy was unique among the German regions. The city of Hamburg is also one of the 16 federal sates called Bundesländer.

Nevertheless, Mehr Demokratie started the struggle against the backlash. From 13 February until 5 March the citizens of Hamburg can sign a submission aiming to introduce fair regulations again.

Activists from Hamburg are campaigning in the streets: They inform passers-by about the citizens submission. A tough job: it is no longer possible to gather signatures directly. The hopeful supporters have to persuaded to go to an office and sign there.

Members from Mehr Demokratie and the Omnibus for Direct Democracy (Omnibus für direkte Demokratie) from all over Germany are helping them. The cold and stormy weather does not prevent them to campaign for more democracy.

This solidarity is vital for the success of the campaigns of the direct democracy movement in Germany.
