EU Constitution - Ratification

No Referendum. Parliamentary approval.

 

Cyprus has ratified the EU constitution after its parliament approved it on June 30. Thirty deputies voted in favour of the treaty, 19 voted against and one abstained. Most of the no-votes came from the communist camp. Cyprus, which is one of the ten new EU members that joined the bloc on 1 May 2004, as the first country to ratify the document after EU leaders decided in June to ut the ratification process on ice following the rejection of the document in both the French and Dutch referendums.

So far no referendum on European issues

Cyprus was the only one of the ten new Member States not to submit the accession treaty, signed in Athens on 16 April 2003, to a referendum.

But in 2004 took place a vote on the United Nations' plan of the reunification of the island. The Turks in the North voted in favour. But the Greek dominated Southern part blocked the reunifikation with a 'no'.
