Bremen: Taking the hard way
The regional branch of Mehr Demokratie in Bremen has started a campaign for the introduction of a new voting law.
The city of Bremen is also an independent Bundesland (Federal state) of Germany. Thus the group is taking the hard way: They will initiate a referendum from bottom-up.
In the first step the activists will collect 5.000 signatures: That many citizens have to sign the application for approval.
Afterwards, the second phase starts. 10% of all citizens entitled to vote have to support the submission. The total number is: 50.000.
If our group is able to manage this, a referendum will follow: Then the final decision will be made at the ballot box. This event is supposed to happen in May 2007.
Fundamentals of the proposed election law
- each voters will have five votes
- each voter can split his votes to different candidates
- each voter can support candidates from different parties
- each candidate can receive up to five votes
